Poetry today

What is the face of poetry today? What literary period is going on right now? Who are the poets around us? Do we need a revolution?

Writing poems has always been a great art, in fact, the poetry as such is the oldest art and it underwent a lot of changes from that philosophical point of view. In my research, I would like to go more into details of the human thinking in poetry. I do not want to talk about the aesthetic meaning of the poetry, even though a lot of people emphasise this as the most important point of the poetry. But this point is rather relative. In fact, all poetry is quite relative, polysemantic and general. Most of the time, we simply do not understand the way the author meant this or that. We can feel the poetry according to our mood, so that every time we read the poem, we can find different things. And this is the relativity of poetry, it is the same with the term of aesthetic in general (For some people some things are beautiful, while others find it disgusting, and so on... )

So, let’s better look at the poetry from the other point of view. In the previous centuries there has been so many events, philosophies and events that caused the same changes in literature. Poetry has always been like a mirror, and poets are those who want us to look into that mirror and see... But poets sometimes seem to us a little bit strange, most of the time they are not understood. They were often considered to be fool of execrated, or even antisocial.

But the truth is that they usually do not stand contra society, but they just try to stand a little bit out of society to have some better view on the things happening in. Everyone who wants to see, that one starts to write poems. Poets are simply those who see. Those poets who see the best are called by other poets as genes. We can also say, the more poets around us, the better world to live in, because poets are simply angels. And you ask, how do I know that? I just believe that. But it is not only me who says that. Plato also said that poets are possessed speakers of divine truth. Now, I will quote his words: ‘They do not speak of them by any rules of art, they are simply inspired to utter that to which the Muse impels them.’ American modernist writer William Carlos Williams once wrote: ‘We are blind and we live our blind lives in the blindness, but the poets although they are execrated, they are not blind, they see, by the eyes of angels.’

So, we can say, that although the reality is relative and we can not search it in anyway, we can still try... And all the arts try to search for true. Maybe some people find definitely no satisfaction in the art, but if they are rather scientific or material orientated, they should at least tolerate the art... because it is really important. Art is here for everybody. Art is like the game for adults (Freud). On one side, it is the result of the human need to create something and on the other, it is the way to tell the people something or to unite their minds in case of some deeper meaning of their work.

In the history of the human being, there was formed lots of artistic ways, but until the 20th century, it was all developing in rather linear line. The 20th century brought some rapid changes to the life of whole world civilization. First, the art itself started to react to that situation (popart, modernism, postmodernism,...), but after some time, the art became for people just an artificial feature and lost its deeper meaning. Today, we know mainly the art of advert, the art of communication, the art of money-making,... And it is absolutely not what it used to be. The real art of today tries to react to that situation and it appeals on people’s minds desiring to make them realize the importance of traditional worthies.

So, I’ve already mentioned that the poetry also reacts to political, environmental and social situation. There was still some changing of periods with contradictory features, e.g.: nature-supernature, human-society, tradition-progress,... But, as I am very interested in the art of poetry, I ask myself what literary period is going on right now. To be able to answer this I searched some websites and I found some interesting informations.

Once, I heard that this period is not really sure. The pluralism causes confusions in people’s minds, the technokracy turns the human-being system up-side down, the globalizational progress differs the worthies of today’s people. And this is the situation that we live in today. We are just not sure. We just do not know. There is still the poetry to show us the way, but people still do not have time, the poetry has been pushed away from everyday life. And this is the problem. For people it is impossible to admit the idea that the society in this time of contra-culture is having its decadence. ´Why only?, we ask,´The progress is getting better, so why would the society decade?´ People forget for those angels around them, they have no time to listen to them or to read them. TV, advert, DVD, journals, that is enough. The philosophy, the art, the literature, it all suffers today. It lacks the nature, the tradition, the clear line.

As I read some ideas of people working in this field, I realize that in this world, there is a need for a new artistic way that would attract more people and that would unite them spiritually. But this is just the idealistic idea, nearly impossible. So I also asked my friends who write poems for advice and I discussed with them the need for revolution in the art.

What revolution do the artists mean?

I have already mentioned that some poets and some other artists feel the decadence of today´s art based on the ignorance from the side of the modern society. This so-called modern society is like a minority with a huge power in this world. They use their power to confuse people, to profit from the disaster of the others or to converse the ideas of happy living. They also use their power to destroy the nature. They develop the art of advert and build atificial ways of life. This all has its roots in egoism. This minority possesses various ways to infect the others. And this is what bothers the artists, so that they are searching for the resolution... although they still have the ideas, it would be ridiculous to fight against the progress, the technical changes and so this questions still remain opened.

Other ideas for the revolution are those of returning back to the nature. As I read some of the recent works and poems, I think that authors feel like dying in the world of city. They need their original roots, to be able to exist, to be able to bring some freshness into their works of art. These roots can only be found in the nature. So one of the characteristic desires of today artists is to bring more nature to the city more traditions to the city life and to establish the inverse situation (it means that the city should take its lessons from the nature living).

The civilization is just the temporary illness

These are the words of Robinson Jeffers that he used in one poem. And it can also be another point for that revolutionary ideas. So some try not to catch the illness and write with a clear mind and others go the other way... In general, poets dream about the permanent freedom and peace. Just like the angels, in their poems they show the people those parts of the world where the civilization did not come yet and where people live in peace and good...

This is the face of the art of poetry only from one point if view. In fact, the creation of poetry has a lot of modifications. I have consulted only one of them trying to predict the passing and the following literary period. The number of poets and styles is still rising according to the principles of pluralism, but at the same time it cannot prove the same quality of all literary works. So if we want to save the right face of literature, we always need to pay attention to its deeper meaning, as I have already mentioned.

As I consulted some of those ideas with my friends from grammar school, I realized that I am too theoretical and traditional in writing poems. They suddenly appeared more relaxed and free to me. So, I paid more attention to what they were saying.

They said that they did not feel any atmosphere of starting revolution, or any need for revolution., but at the same time they agreed that maybe some time later, our time will be considered by literary critics as some kind of revolution. It is just the matter of the time.

We agreed that there were a lot of poets around us, but maybe we are still too joung to form the literary groups. Than they named the today´s situation of literature as the time of individualism. I am sure that they felt it according to the events and conditions that surrounds them. They also think that there is no postmodernism today. The situation of today´s modern times has its great basic in pluralism. And so that it is hard even for them to consider themselves definitely as members of this or that group.

I also ask them for the greatest inspiration for writing. They said that they inspire themselves mainly by people around them. And I think that is just the point of writing, you need to have s great sense of observation to be able to describe everything in appropriate and interesting way with a deeper meaning. I also liked these relaxed faces my friends always write with. They do not have any special intentions, instead of just to write about the world. Anyway, I also think that the intention still rests on the readers who should listen attentively to the voices of these angels....

We also tried to discover what are the most important points of today´s writing. We just named only three features: recession + retro + new points melting together and creating the recent face of poetry.

Inqury for students

There is another thing I am very interested in when talking about the recent literature. For example, how many poets do we have between us, do they form some literary groups, what inspires them, what is their relationship to the poetry and the art...

So, I decided to make an inquiry between students at the University of Constantinus Philosopher in Nitra and I found out following informations:

It was a pleasant surprise to find out how many people write poetry. 6 people from 15 answered that they write poems. The results of my inqury convinced me that most of the people write poety just for pleasure. They take this art as an apolitical feature that helps them to compensite a need for a play. On the other hand, there is another group of people that feel the poetry and some other arts as political ones. In this way, they want to clear up some social relationships, find ekocogical resolutions and express their political ideas. Those points still accompany their poetry, if only it is sentimental, lyrical or subjective one.

But to return back to those most common types of poets, I found out that they use mostly their subjective feelings to express pain, sadness, hapiness, or feelings such as love or hate. Death, love,.... , various kinds of human mood , all those emotions that hit the human sensibility are the things that influence their work the most. In this way, the function of poetry can be understood as a medecine.

I also mentioned that I am interested if those people form some literary groups. The inquiry just proved what my friends said about today’s state of individualism. It really works today. Only a few of them have some poets around. Maybe, a lot of them will leave this activity, if they will be no more dependant on it. But, on the other hand, those who will be really interested in it, will appreciate a group of people which will enhance their developement. I am sure there is a lot of them who dream about publishing a collection of poems...

To conclude, I am happy that the poetry still develops. No matter, who writes what, the most important is that this eternal art has still its stable place in the social life. We should not forget for the traditional and worthy face of this art. Especially, in our country, we should be aware or consumption affecting the art, because in this fable (still postcomunistic) situation, it can simply cause the degradation of it.

So I wish, that the following generation of poets, by using some of above mantioned fresh and sensible human ideas, will be able to rescue the art.

Pozor, na konci je potreba spočítať neľahkú matematickú úlohu! Inak komentár nevložíme. Pre tých lenivejších je tam tlačidlo kúzlo.
